The 21st October is Apple Day; a tradition that began in 1990, thanks to Common Ground (a Dorset based charity which has been at the forefront of community conservation and environmental education in England for the last thirty years). The goal of Apple Day was to establish a seasonal custom, an autumn holiday that goes beyond just apples. From the very beginning, Apple Day was about more than simply enjoying the fruit. It was a way to highlight the incredible variety we're at risk of losing—not just in apples, but also in the diverse landscapes, ecosystems, and cultures that are tied to them. It’s also been a platform for increasing awareness about the provenance and traceability of food.
Scrumpy fabrics
Inspired by Apple day, in 2023 created my "Scrumpy" collection of tea towels and fabrics, celebrating autumn and our connection to the wonderful fruit and the ecology it supports.
Using the entwining design style of William Morris and Arts and Crafts movement, I wanted to create a design that helped to foster the connection between food, nature, and our British design heritage.
